Abstracts, collects and analyzes data on healthcare events to reduce the incidence of such events and to protect patients, staff and visitors from organism/infections transmission or other quality and safety concerns. Informs clinical personnel of pertinent data on adverse healthcare associated events and quality of care outcomes. Collaborates with Infection Prevention staff.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Performs analytic activities on assigned divisions recording demographic/clinical risk information as well as information on adverse outcomes including defined healthcare associated events to ensure safe quality care to all patients.
    • 1.1 Visits assigned patient, inpatient or ambulatory care areas at designated intervals for the purpose of collecting pertinent information concerning patients with community and hospital acquired infections and other adverse healthcare associated events as determined by pre-defined surveillance criteria.
  • 2. Performs various departmental duties as assigned by supervisor to enhance the efficient operation of the department.
    • 2.1 In the absence of other support staff, provides work coverage and follows-up on problems requiring immediate attention.
  • 3. Recognizes responsibility for continuing education needs to maintain accurate and current knowledge about infection prevention, patient safety and quality improvement.
    • 3.1 Maintains competency by reading relevant infection prevention, safety and quality improvement and infection prevention articles. Shares information with department colleagues.
  • 4. Communicates information to others in a clear and concise manner so that the message can be fully understood.
    • 4.1 Responds promptly to requests for consultation on infection prevention matters. Maintains open and frequent communication with leaders and staff on patient care unit.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

 

Graduate of an approved Licensed Practical Nurse Program or equivalent (Associate's Degree in Allied Health programs or Bachelor's Degree in clinically related field).

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Two (2) to three (3) years experience with emphasis in acute care, microbiology or clinical record abstraction preferred. Use of technology, including Microsoft Office desirable.

 

LICENSURE

 

Active nursing license for the State of Connecticut, if applicable.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

 

Special interest in epidemiology and infection prevention; excellent communication skills; highly motivated, tactful in dealing with others; ability to handle stressful situations; willingness to learn and apply knowledge appropriately.

 

PHYSICAL DEMAND

 

Prolonged sitting and computer work. Walking and shuttling through-out the YNHH medical center campuses. Ability to travel to other delivery network hospitals when needed.
